Music Class/ Making Snow People/ Family Tradition

Today in music class, the Cardinals enjoyed exploring their choice of instruments and creating their own music. Soon after, Keisha played her recorder and friends began to clean up and then took a seat in a circle to begin our music and movement work.  Friends used scarves while moving around the room, waving their scarves and singing a new song titled, "It's snowing."  We also did a call and response chant in which Keisha sang and the Cardinals participated by chanting the beginning, middle, and end of the song.

Back in our classroom, the Cardinals worked on creating their very own individual snow people.  On blue construction paper, friends used a mixture of shaving cream and glue to create their snow person. They added eyes, nose, mouth, hats, hair, arms, and legs by using pompoms, buttons, beads, yarn, googly eyes and markers.  Friends also cut out their own hats for their snow people.

Through this work, each Cardinal practiced eye-hand coordination skills, fine motor skills, problem-solving skills, attention to detail,  creativity, shapes, and social skills as they worked to complete their work.

On this very cold winter day, we went to the gym for some much needed large motor fun!

After rest time, Almy's mom, Carla, and dad, Chris, came to share their family's tradition of celebrating the Three Kings Day.  Almy introduced her mom and dad to the class and told us what they were going to share with us. Carla shared that she is from Spain and that in Spain they have a tradition, and on that day of the Epiphany they get a gift. Carla shared a short story of the Epiphany and Three Kings. Some of the tradition includes leaving your shoes under the tree so the Three Kings know how many people live in the house and the size/age of the people. Since the Three Kings and camels have been traveling for so long, people leave out water, carrots and/or hay for the camels and a cake for the Three Kings.

After listening to the history and story of Three Kings day, friends got to eat the special cake that is prepared for us. Friends enjoyed the cake and all but two Cardinals had a second helping of cake! When friends were finished with their cake, friends got to color in pictures with the Three Kings on them.

Thank you, Chris and Carla, for sharing your family's tradition with us. And thank you, Almy, for sharing your family with us!

                          Have a wonderful evening everyone!
