Literacy workshop

This morning after Meeting for Worship in the music room, the Cardinals took part in their first literacy workshop of the school year. As we were going over our Daily Schedule during morning meeting, one of the Cardinals noticed and shared with the class that library, literacy and lunch all start with the letter L. This was a great introduction into our literacy workshop and way to share with the Cardinals the work they would be doing today. Then, to be dismissed from the rug to wash hands for snack time. Friends were asked to come up with a word that begins with the letter "L." If friends needed help, they asked for a clue.
Friends were very excited and eager to get started. We set up four activities on the tables. One of the activities was practicing writing our names on sign-in paper. Another was working with the magnetic alphabet, where friends could trace the letters with a magnetic pen and/or their fingers. At the third station, sand was placed on trays and friends wrote their names in the sand with a chopstick. The fourth station was making letters out of playdough. In the block area, friends worked together to complete a floor alphabet puzzle. At the front table, friends also played a game of alphabet bingo.

All of the above centers helped friends to practice their letter awareness and recognition, as well as fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Stay dry on this rainy evening!
